Julia’s Version: Romance, With Mayonnaise

Julia begins with the date she wanted.

There would be a beautiful dress, a confident man in a proper suit and a stylish party filled with cocktails and music. The evening would end beside a moonlit pool with a perfectly timed kiss.

The actual date produces a different list. Her date arrives late, chooses a boring movie and falls asleep during it. He forgets the dinner reservation, so they buy sandwich ingredients from a grocery store. He then attempts a kiss with dirty hands and mayonnaise still visible on his mouth.

By the time Julia finishes telling Sofia and Beth what happened, disappointment has become a prosecution. When her friends point out the man walking across campus, Julia decides to confront him immediately.

Dennis’s Version: This Must Be Fate

Dennis is thinking about classes, groceries and mowing the lawn when he notices Julia heading directly toward him.

He does not see someone preparing a confrontation. He sees an unexpectedly cute girl who might have noticed him first.

Within moments, Dennis has imagined the nice car, the stylish party and the kiss beside the pool. His fantasy mirrors Julia’s almost perfectly, except he has no idea that her version of the evening has already gone terribly wrong.
